Want your family to eat healthy? Here are some simple tips

Quality nutrition is important for every single member of the family! When we eat enough of the right foods and nutrients, it helps our bodies fight disease, we focus better at work and at school, and we have a better sense of overall wellness.

Here’s the good news: healthy family nutrition doesn’t have to be hard or expensive! There’s no time like the present to start using these tips and then when school starts, you can easily adapt to the new schedule.

Reduce processed foods

Prepackaged food may be handy, but processed food is filled with ingredients that are not good for your body. In most grocery stores, purchasing most of your food along the outer edges instead of the middle aisles is an easy way to avoid a lot of canned and other processed foods. If you never purchase the food in the first place, you won’t have it at home to eat it!

Keep healthy snacks on hand

Make healthy snacking healthy and easy. Cut up fruits and veggies and keep them in a visible spot in your fridge so they are quick and easy to grab. Keep a variety of fruits and veggies around to make sure you're getting all the nutrients you need and keep your taste buds from getting bored. Buying seasonal is the best way to do this and it will save you money.

Make a plan

Whether it's weekly, monthly, or every few days, plan out your meals and make a grocery list. This ensures you are making good choices and not just picking up what looks tasty at the store. This also helps keep you from stopping at the drive thru on the way home because you know what the plan for dinner is.

Eat balanced

Make sure your meals have a good balance of protein, carbohydrates, and fat. I’m happy to work with any patients who want help figuring out what food choices are best for them.

Drink water

Adults and kids alike have no need for sugary drinks, be it soda and even most fruit juices. Water is vitally important to every cell of our body. Hydration is incredibly important no matter your age. Caffeine and alcohol should be used in moderation.

Be a good example

This tip is mostly for the parents and older siblings in the family. Be a good example. Your kids will eat what they see you eating. If you make healthy choices the majority of the time your kids will follow.
