In a perfect world, we would all be eating a wide variety of very nutritional food. But we don't live in an ideal world. We live in a world of convenience where a quick meal from a restaurant and packaged snacks on the go make up the majority of our diets.
When we talk about nutrition, I will always recommend starting with the food first. This means eating real, whole foods. Even when we strive to eat healthily, most of our food doesn't hold the same nutritional value it once did due to the overworking of the land. Our soil doesn't contain the same nutrients it once did. A good rule of thumb is the less packaged and processed, the better. But for most of us, this isn't realistic.
Supplements are a perfect way to help supplement our diets with the nutrients our bodies need. Let's talk about the three essential supplements that I believe everybody needs as a base.
Multivitamins contain a mix of vitamins and minerals for optimal health. Adding a multivitamin to your diet can go a long way in improving your health. Multivitamins have been shown to help improve nutritional deficiencies, protect the cardiovascular system, improve cognitive function, and support the gastrointestinal system. If you only take one thing away from this blog, add a multivitamin to your routine and see how your health improves.
Probiotics are live microorganisms (bacteria) that support our microbiome. Probiotics are essential in helping with gastrointestinal health and even our immune system. They are found in fermented foods like yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, and kombucha. When our diets get out of balance, the good bacteria in our gut get overrun with bad bacteria that are harmful to our health. The bad bacteria causes things like irregular bowel movements, bad breath, brain fog, and a decreased immune response. We have to add the good bacteria and the easiest way to do that is with a probiotic.
Omega 3 fatty acids are a cluster of essential fatty acids. Essential means our body is unable to make them, so we must get them from food sources. To get the recommended amount of Omega 3 from our diet, we need to eat high-quality fish at least three times per week. This is not possible or even desirable for most people, so the best way to do this is by taking a high-quality supplement. Omega 3s are great for reducing overall inflammation in the body. It has also been shown to improve cognitive function and cardiovascular health.
For some, the idea of adding this many supplements to life can feel overwhelming. My recommendation is to pick the one that stands out the most to you based on your lifestyle and what your body is experiencing. Once you start feeling the difference in your health, add in another. Life is all about small sustainable changes that you can slowly add over time. It's not a race!
